Skincare Musts During The Winter Season | BLOGMAS No. 7

Okay, so we all know maskne is a *thing*, unfortunately so is winter skin. Allow me to explain to you how to counter act any maskne and how to alleviate some dryness according to your skin types!

I will break this post up into three skin types, Dry, Oily, Normal/Combination.

DRY:

Let's begin with dry skin. Now the obvious question is how would you know that you have dry skin? you could just be dehydrated, not dry. The obvious would be to wash your face and strip it clean. Without adding anything onto your skin allow an hour to go by and then examine your skin, if you have some shine around your t-zone you are most likely normal/combination with dehydrated skin. if your oily all over you are most likely not dry skinned. Obviously if there is no moisture or if there are dry patches you have dry skin. A very common mistake is that people think that if you have acne you cannot have dry skin but that is a very common misconception acne can be caused by dehydrated skin.

Now that we have established you have dry skin, we have to establish the obvious problem, DRINK WATER. This may seem very obvious but is usually the most common culprit for acne in dry skin. There are many different layers to your skin and nothing that you put on the topical layer will ever cure or help restore those layers beneath the skin unless you drink water!

The best products that I have found that work best for not only myself but my customers as well have been a great oil or heavy serum, combined with a heavy cream during the night and a lighter spf during the day. The best creams for this skin type should contain hyaluronic acid which can also be called sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, anything from the sea like algea, caviar, kelp, or seaweed these allow water to be delivered more directly to the dehydrated skin cells.

I will be linking my faves down below as well with a few alternatives to each product in price point.

Clarins -- Gentle Foaming Cleanser

Pai -- Oil Cleanser

Pai -- Rosehip Oil

La Mer -- Creme

Sisley -- Velvet Sleeping Mask

Estee Lauder -- Serum

Estee Lauder -- Day Cream

Shiseido -- SPF

OILY:

Oily skin is actually beneficial in many ways and it can lead to less wrinkles over the years as you can have more supple skin and oils. However, this can also lead to more clogged pores and decongestion so daily exfoliation is a necessity. A great toner and light weight night cream that is oil free can be amazing. Spf is always a must in your day cream but you can use alternatives that are lighter weight.

Oily skin is more prone to PIH which is a form of hyper pigmentation that can cause darker spots in the skin from sun spots to acne marks. Using ingredients that area antibacterial and not heavy are essential. Stay way from oils, and face mists.

NORMAL/COMBINATION:

This skin type is the most common one if I'm being totally honest, most people get offended when you tell them this, I'm not very sure why. But most people have an oily t-zone and a dry outer ring on their face. You will want to do double masks and a gentle exfoliator on your t-zone. the perfect cream is one that is not too heavy and too light, just right. I also strongly recommend some hyaluronic acid as it will help to regulate the skin cells and allow for your skin to become a little more even. It will not always be the same, skin evolves as we do and our hormones and eating habits, stress levels all change.

Now lets talk MASKNE, it has happened to all of us, now through my trial and errors over the last few months I think I have found what works best for me and has helped my coworkers as well. Firstly, find a mask that is nice to your skin, if you will be wearing it for a full days work like I do, it is not only important hat it is comfortable  but that the material you are using is skin friendly. Switching to silk masks has completely changed the game for me. I used the blue standard masks that are single use terrible cannot breathe my glasses fog up. I switched to a standard cotton mask and although that was much more comfortable it was terrible for acne. I had five that I used daily and washed at the end of the week but it was not enough. Also, if you are not washing your reusable masks, please wash them.

You need to wash your face as soon as you get home and take that mask off. Do not wait for the end of the day. The bacteria is live and will continue to live on your face if you do not wash it off. I learned this the hard way. It has to be cleaned immediately. The cleanser you use does not matter as long as it is good for your skin type.

Here are the best ones that I found.
